Karongi: Police recovers stolen diesel

{Police in Karongi District have recovered 420 litres of diesel stolen from China Road and Bridge Corporation, a Chinese firm constructing the Rusizi-Karongi-Rubavu highway.}

The fuel in 21 jerrycans was recovered on February 1 in a police operation conducted in early morning hours in the villages of Kagabiro and Ryaruhanga in Mubuga Sector.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, police spokesperson for the Western Province, the successful operation was mounted after “responsible residents” informed police about the likely theft of fuel with in the Chinese firm.

“We found it hidden in residents’ houses, and it was taken to Gishyita Police station as investigations into the theft, continues,” said Supt. Hitayezu.

It’s not the first time police in this area has arrested people in this area in connection with theft of petroleum in this Chinese firm.

Last year, police also arrested two people also in Gishyita Sector after they were found in possession of 180 diesel and 80 litres of oil.

“Most of the people implicated in this theft are employees of this company including drivers and security guards,” he explained.

He instead advised them to cease such employment opportunities instead of indulging themselves in such unlawful malpractices that in the end renders them jobless.

He noted that besides being a criminal offence, theft of these materials are likely to hinder construction works and timely completion of such infrastructures meant to help the public by connecting them to the market, a reason why the public shouldn’t fight them by reporting those involved to police.
