Village leaders and community health workers in Karongi District have been urged to strengthen cooperation and collaboration with police in fighting and preventing crimes, which will contribute ensuring sustainable security.
Drocella Mukashema, the vice mayor in charge of social welfare made the call on April 8, during a meeting that brought together the village leaders and community health workers in Karongi.
It was also attended by the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP) Jean Baptiste Rutebuka.
“All crimes can be prevented or reduced if we all actively work together with security organs to identify and apprehend those involved. Some of these wrongdoers are known in communities, so hold that mantle and prevente crime in your villages,” Mukashema said.
She urged them to be exemplary and use their influence to engage people in their areas to always partner with the police in crime prevention.
IP Rutebuka also appealed to them to always provide timely information on anything illegal or suspicious, and report conflict-affected families so as to handle their issues before they escalate.
He further asked them to partner with other crime prevention groups like Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing to sensitize the public against crimes like drug abuse, domestic and gender based violence, and human trafficking.
The DCLO seized the opportunity to educate them about genocide ideology, what constitutes it and their role in fighting it.
“In this 22nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, we should all work together to fight genocide ideology and also educate residents against uttering words that may amount to genocide ideology,” said IP Rutebuka.
He told them to be active in commemoration activities and be close to the survivors in this trying period.
