{As part of the Rwanda National Police (RNP) strategies to promote road safety while preventing accidents, the force reached out to pupils of Gihinga Primary School in Gacurabwenge Sector of Kamonyi District and gave them road safety tips.}
Inspector of Police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira, the in-charge traffic in Kamonyi, who gave a lengthy road safety lecture to over 300 pupils of Gihinga on February 12, explained to them the meaning of Zebra Crossing, traffic lights and how safely to cross the road.
“A zebra crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing with distinguished alternating dark and light stripes on the road surface, resembling the coat of a zebra. A zebra crossing typically gives priority rights of way to pedestrians,” IP Niyonagira demonstrated the pupils.
A set of automatically operated coloured red, amber or orange and green lights, on the other hand, control traffic at road junctions, pedestrian crossings, and roundabouts.
The green light allows traffic to proceed in the direction denoted; yellow light provides warning that the signal will be changing from green to red or from red to green; red signal prohibits any pedestrian or traffic from proceeding.
“Some of you have dangerous tendencies of playing in the middle of the road, which should stop with immediate effect. Always be vigilant and in case you want to stop a vehicle so your colleagues can cross the road, you should raise a hand towards the direction where a vehicle is coming from but wait until the automobile stops to cross,” he added.
Pascal Ndahayo, the school head-teacher, who thanked RNP for extending such road safety message to the young ones, noted that this has opened their eyes on how to behave while walking or crossing the roads.
He also echoed the same message warning the pupils against playing in the middle of the road especially highways where they play football from, and just crossing the road where they can be hit by vehicles, motorcycles or bicycles.
