{About 120 recently elected village and cell leaders of Runda Sector in Kamonyi District held a meeting on March 22 to discuss their roles in community policing and crime prevention.}
The meeting of local leaders, who all automatically becomes members of community policing committees (CPCs), was also attended by the District Police Commander of Kamonyi, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Marcel Kalisa.
“We have a mandate of equally ensuring security and developing our area. Our success lies in a safer community that why we have come together to put our ideas together and understand the concept in crime prevention,” said Agnes Mukashyaka, one of the participants.
She added that during her tenure in the office as the coordinator of Rugogwe Village in Kabagesera Cell, she would ensure that much focus is put on fighting against domestic violence.
“As local leaders and members of CPCs, we want to create a closer partnership with security agencies so that we can collectively address criminality and also advance the welfare of our people,” she added.
She went on to say that cases of assault and domestic violence are in most cases caused by drug abuse, which they agreed to focus on to fight it.
CIP Kalisa, meanwhile, rallied for cooperation in crime prevention and also enlightened them about some common crimes like fraud, drug abuse and assault among others.
“You interact with the people more frequent and you should seize the opportunity to sensitize them against crimes,” said the DPC.
Kamonyi District Police Unit (DPU) recently embarked on sensitizing newly elected local leaders in taking the lead in crime prevention.
The meeting in Runda comes after a similar one that was recently held in Nyarubaka Sector also in Kamonyi which drew over 145 new members of CPCs.
