Kamonyi: CPCs urged to reinforce crime prevention mechanisms

Rwanda National Police has urged members of Community Policing Committees in Kamonyi District to prioritize crime prevention mechanisms in their neighborhood.

In a meeting held last week and drew 145 members of Community Policing Committee in Nyarubaka Sector of Kamonyi District, the District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Athanase Niyonagira reminded attendants that they have to always look out for any one that is suspected to be a criminal and inform the police.

“You play a crucial role in crime prevention within the societies that’s why we continuously remind you of your responsibilities as Strong partners in crime prevention . You should as well encourage residents in your neighborhood to always share timely information on any suspected crimes,” IP Niyonagira told members of CPCs

The meeting focused on discussing anti-crime measures and strengthening partnerships that enable collective initiatives against threats to peace and security in neighborhoods.

IP Niyonagira reminded the CPCs to be professional and exemplary in their daily community policing activities in order to win the trust of the residents.

“Residents need to trust you – but you cannot earn their trust if you are caught up in drunkenness, abusing drugs, conniving with criminals or not conducting your work efficiently on a daily basis. Your work is paramount and needs uttermost focus and respect, for your communities” IP Niyonagira said.

“Overall, community policing works well if your conduct is trustworthy. Through that, residents will be comfortable to work with you to report crime and ensure success in sharing of criminal information .”

IP Niyonagira went on to tell members of CPCs that they should ensure they reach out to any family that may be having conflicts and help in reuniting them.

The Executive Secretary of Nyarubaka Sector Epimaque Mpazimana thanked Rwanda National Police for its continued public awareness saying that the force reaches out to different categories of people who help in ensuring public safety.

During the event, members of CPCs formed a community anti-crime club and elected Jean Paul Nyandwi as its head.
