Rwandan President Paul Kagame, 58, has joined his colleagues Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Salva Kiir of South Sudan and Russia’s Vladimir Putin among others to congratulate President Museveni on winning the February 18 election in Uganda.
In a diplomatic note sent Sunday to Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Kagame said Museveni’s victory in the February 18 presidential elections is “certainly a reflection of the trust the Ugandan people have in your ability to lead them forward in their quest for prosperity and socio-economic transformation.”
Kagame and Museveni are close friends, having fought together in the NRA war between 1981-86.
He would later travel for a military course at Fort Leavenworth in United States only to return to lead the RPF struggle against the regime of Juvenal Habyarimana following the death of Maj Gen Fred Rwigema.
According to officials at Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Ministry in Kampala, Kagame in his message told Museveni that Rwanda wishes him “success in your term of office, and remains ready to strengthen the excellent ties existing between our two brotherly countries.”
Museveni defeated seven other presidential candidates with a 60 percent of the total vote count.
The opposition have since protested the outcome of the election.
