Kagame: I don’t want to be president for life but Rwandans want me back

{Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, shortly after casting his vote in the ongoing referendum on a proposed constitutional amendment on term limits, has told reporters he doesn’t want to be president for life. Rather, Kagame said, it is the people of Rwanda who want him back.}

Mr Kagame is quoted as having said. “I don’t want. Ask Rwandans who are asking me why they want me.”

A majority of Rwandans back efforts to amend the constitution to allow Kagame seek another term.

On when he will pronounce himself on whether he is seeking reelection, Kagame who has previously said he will do so after today’s referendum said: “Let’s see that when times comes.”

Asked on what he hopes to do for Rwanda if he is re-elected, the president said: “Look at the record and decide for yourself.”

He responded jokingly when asked whether he is grooming a successor: “Do you want to apply?”

Kagame arrived at the Nyarugenge District polling station where he voted at 11:20am local time in company of his wife Jeannette Nyiramongi Kagame and daughter Ange Kagame.

Voting continues across the country with a high turn-up.
Yesterday, over 40,000 Rwandans in the Diaspora voted in the referendum.
