Japan backed community center for genocide widows inaugurated in Kicukiro

{A Community Center aimed at empowering the Genocide Widows funded by the Government of Japan was officially inaugurated on Monday in Kicukiro District, Nyarugunga Sector. A grant amounting up to 103,099 USD was funded by the Embassy of Japan under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) in order to construct a conference hall, three workshop rooms, and toilets of the Community Center. }

The Association de Veuves du Genocide AGAHOZO, a recipient of the fund, has completed to construct all the components funded by the Government of Japan, as well as additional buildings including a lodge, administration rooms, a restaurant and a kitchen.

The opening ceremony took place at the Community center with Mr. Tomio SAKAMOTO, Chargé D’Affairesa.i. of the Embassy of Japan, the Chairperson of AVEGA AGAHOZO, Ms. Valerie MUKABAYIRE, the representative of the Cell, and Genocide Widows.

Mr. Tomio SAKAMOTO, Chargé D’Affairesa of the Embassy of Japan, said in his remarks, “We expect the Community Center will be used for the Genocide Widows to assemble among themselves to hold workshops for income-generating activities and showcase their products, and I believe such an opportunity will contribute to alleviate their trauma and support their reintegration into the society.

Ms. Valerie MUKABAYIRE, Chairperson of AVEGA AGAHOZO, expressed her gratitude for the support by the Government of Japan, and said such partnership will greatly support all the vulnerable women, consequently which also contribute to the well-being of all the families and people in Rwanda.

Since the framework of GGP was established between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Embassy of Japan in 1996, the government of Japan has supported grass roots activities for the amount of about 6 million dollars especially in the areas of education, water and sanitation as well as agriculture.
