{A parliamentary delegation from Israel led by the Speaker of Parliament, Ronen Plot, on Wednesday ended a four-day working visit to Rwanda, an official source told APA in Kigali.It is said that the visit enabled the Israeli lawmakers to hold talks with senior Rwandan officials, including President Paul Kagame and their peers, on ways and means of strengthening economic cooperation and parliamentary consultation.}
The Israel delegation also enquired about the numerous achievements made by the Rwandan government particularly agriculture and culture and visited the museum of the Central African nation’s ancient history in Nyanza, a district located at around 100km from Kigali.
An official statement issued in Kigali on Wednesday said the Israel delegation’s visit was to discuss with Rwandan parliamentarians the need to promote straight collaboration between the two institutions.
Among the existing key areas of cooperation between the two countries are defense and agriculture.
Since 2011, at least one hundred young Rwandan college students have benefited from a one-year scholarship offered by the Israeli government through the Agro-studies internship program to hon their academic skills in agriculture technologies.
The Rwandan government said the internship is advantageous as it provides opportunity for practical training that would produce the best farmers in the country where 60 percent of the populations live below the poverty line and 90 percent of the land is mostly comprised small holdings.
Agriculture is the mainstay of Rwanda’s economy, contributing 40 percent of the country’s $3.4 billion gross domestic product, according to official statistics.
Kigali and Tel Aviv established diplomatic relations shortly after Rwanda’s independence in July1962, which were severed in October 1973 and reestablished in October 1994.
