Rice farmers in Bugesera District have expressed complaints about bad conditions of arable land of Rurambi marshland.
The Project of Supporting Development in Bugesera District (PADAB), since 2010, has spent over Frw 7.8 billion to irrigate over 850 ha of arable land in Rurambi so that rice farmers can produce more as the land was irrigated.
Bugesera residents are expected to gain from irrigated areas as well as using the later in the cultivation of selected crops especially rice.
Freddy Hakizimana in charge of irrigation infrastructure in PADAB says that by the end of this February all 1000 ha of the marshland will be at their final stage of irrigation.
Activities done in area include building a dike to prevent rainwater from causing floods and two pumping systems that will help rice farmers to get water.
After irrigation activities, farmers are expected to benefit from high yields of rice which planned to shift from 5 tons per ha to about 7-8 tonnes per ha of the produce.
About 3,400 farmers will receive portion of land of 0.25 ha.
