International Womens Day to Feature Special Portraits of Women

One UN Rwanda in collaboration with the US Embassy, the Rwanda Library Services, Agaseke Project and l’Institut Français will celebrate the International women’s day – one day ahead of time – with women and girls from all walks of life and extraordinary career stories.

Starting at 9:30am on March 7th at the Public Library (Rwanda Library Services) in Kacyiru, Kigali the celebration will feature special portraits of women, the screening of a short film, information corners, a discussion panel on the “future we want” and an exhibition by Agaseke weavers (in an open market format).

“The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum” is the global theme of the 2013 International Women’s Day, celebrated each year on the 8th of March. The discussion panel will focus on the stories of successful women in entrepreneurship and non-traditional careers.

“Our brothers are trying hard to make Rwanda a better place, why not me? Why should women remain behind?”, asks Shafiga Murebwa, a police officer.

“I am proud to be a female judge and president of the court because I believe that by exercising my duties I can and do defend the rights of the women of my country”, says Fabienne Kabogambe, judge and President of the Court of Justice.

National authorities, the International community, Gender Clubs, local and international NGOs are expected to attend the event.
