International community commemorates genocide victims

{The World has, for the first time, commemorated the International Day of Genocide. In Rwanda the commemoration was held yesterday at Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, Gisozi, the former headquarters of CNLG and Aegis Trust, an institution responsible for the Memorial and the peace-building programmes.}

Dr. Jean-Damascène Gasanabo, Director General of the Research and Documentation Center on Genocide at CNLG, said that the commemoration is a special moment of honoring victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

University and secondary school students as future leaders held discussions on genocide perpetrated against Tutsi. The discussions are meant to increase awareness on that dark history and build preventive interventions so that the mayhem never happens again.

Honoré Gatera, head guide, Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre revealed that the center receives many guests including foreigners ,Rwandans, researchers, students among others coming to observe what happened in Rwanda.

Gatera says that the program of teaching history of genocide was implemented in secondary schools since 2008.

From 2004, Kigali Genocide Memorial Center received over one million visitors from different countries.

The International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of genocide was confirmed in September this year during the general assembly of United Nations.

The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, in his message emphasized that “Preventing genocide is an international concern and enshrined in international law. Countries must set policies to combat genocide. On this occasion, happening for the first time, let’s join efforts to prevent any form of violence and wanton killings.”
