Burera District Mayor Mujawamariya Florence highlighted this during a visit from the District officials to some 260 inmates, imprisoned in Musanze.
The visit was aimed to urge inmates to accept their faults and seek forgiveness, after serving their sentences.
Mujawamariya Florence said that the fact that they were imprisoned did not put off the fact that they were Rwandans, meaning that the country’s projects and plans includesd them too.
“We discussed on the concept of Unity and Reconciliation, where they need to seek forgiveness from those who they faulted. But before all that, they should learn to make peace with their own hearts so to relieve the burden of guilt.” She remarked adding
“Tthis will further help them after they complete finish serving their sentences, as they prepare to live with their new communities, including the Genocide survivors whose relatives they killed. “It is an initiative we recently launched but it will continue and we hope it shall pay off to give a unified community,.” sShe noted. added
Superintendent Muhizi Protais, the director of Musanze prison, said that the initiative was in line with the prison’s plans of to teaching inmates about the countries’ values and re-introducing them into society.
“Here they are taught to seek forgiveness from those they faulted and it has paid off in past years because when inmates are released after serving their sentences, they get integrated into the community thanks to these discussions,.” Hhe nexplained. oted
Musanze Prison has more than 20,000 inmates, of whoich over 260 who are serving sentences for Genocide-related crimes. They resolved to seek forgiveness for their acts.
