Illicit Drugs Worth Rwf19M Destroyed in Kigali

{{Illicit drugs worth over Rwf19.2 million were on July 19 destroyed in Kigali in a public exercise held at the landfill in Nduba sector of Gasabo district.}}

The destroyed drugs include 7586 pellets and 305 kilogrammes of cannabis, over 230 litres of kanyanga, four boxes of African gin and 165 cartons of Chief Waragi.

The public destruction attended by hundreds of area residents was also witnessed by judicial authorities.

Supt. Modeste Mbabazi, Police spokesperson for the central region said the destroyed drugs were seized in targeted operations conducted in various parts of the City of Kigali in the past six months.

He observed that most of the confiscated drugs were trafficked into the country through porous borders.

He also said majority of those involved in this illegal business were apprehended and handed to prosecution.

“Majority of them were convicted and are facing varied prison terms while others are still in the tried process,” he said.

“Though campaigns against the vice yield positive results, some people are still involved in this life-threatening business. Fighting and preventing it’s trade and consumption remains among Police key priorities,” Supt. Mbabazi noted.

He outlined assault, domestic and gender based violence and theft as some of the crimes fuelled mostly by use of illicit drugs.

Supt. Mbabazi appealed to the public to strengthen the campaign against the vice and report those involved in time.

A 60-year old Callixte Rurangirwa, a resident of Kinyinya faulted parents for lack of parental care, which leaves children to do whatever they want.

“I normally spare time for my children to teach them values, dangers associated with use of drugs and how to live a better life. Unfortunately most parents spend time in their personal or family businesses and rarely spare time for the children and this is why majority people that consume narcotics are the youth,” Rurangirwa noted.
