The call comes fortnight ago after a 35-yearl-old fisherman was fatally attacked by a crocodile. Residents learnt about Joseph Ntibarikure’s death when they discovered half of his body floating on the shores of the lake the next day.
Ntibarikure had gone fishing at night to avoid an arrest.
Eastern Province Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Jean Marie Njangwe said Ntibarikure’s death is saddening, and warned other fishermen to avoid illegal fishing.
He advised fishermen to seek permission from authorities and also inform colleagues when they go into the waters or go with fishing with a partner.
Illegal fishing is punishable by law, he SSP Njangwe said.
