Rwanda Youth and ICT Minister Jean Phillibert Nsengimana on Monday launched SIM Card Registration exercise.
The excersise will conclude on 31st July 2013.
During that period, all mobile subscribers (new and existing) are requested to register their SIM Card to their respective mobile service provider(s).
Minister Nsengimana commends RURA, NIDA, Rwanda National Police and other partners like RDB, MYICT with different Telecommunication Companies operating in Rwanda for organizing the SIM registration exercise.
“I promise you this registration process will increase the security of phone users, I urge Telecom Operators to secure all stored information they’ll receive,” stressed Minister Nsengimana.
Nsengimana also urges Rwandans to embrace this registration process of SIM cards and that it will easily the link business people and their clients.
The Director General of Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA), Regis Gatarayiha said that “SIM Card Registration exercise in Rwanda will decrease mobile phone crimes across the country.”
Mr. Hodge Semakula, The Executive Secretary of the East African Communications Organisation (EACO) noted that SIM card registration has become a serious global exercise in telecoms, with many other countries on course in the region like Uganda and Tanzania.
