I&M Bank honors employees killed in genocide

{As Rwanda commemorates the 22nd genocide against Tutsi in 1994, various institutions continue to remember their employees killed during the genocide. }

The commercial bank, I&M Bank has also remembered its former employees who died during the 1994 genocide against Tutsi.

The commemoration was held at Kigali memorial on Friday where employees of I&M Bank were taken through various parts of Gisozi memorial to witness bad history that marked Rwanda leading to the genocide that took lives of more than one million Tutsi. The tour was concluded by laying wreaths at graves of victims.

In his testimony, Genevieve Banayija who worked in I&M Bank for 30 years explained that before genocide against Tutsi, the bank was characterized by sex related bribery and discrimination exercised on Tutsi employees.

In his remarks, the director of I&M Bank, Robin Bairstow commended RPF/A for stopping genocide against Tutsi and its achievements in building the nation .He then requested everyone to make sure genocide never happens again.

“We lost people. That is the reason why we pay tribute to them as part of remembrance. Genocide never again,” he said.

Apart from remembering former employees killed during the genocide, I&M Bank has renovated the house of a genocide widow, Mukarubega Virginia from Musambira sector in Kamonyi district and provided more support including a water tank, solar energy connection, home furniture including chairs, a table, cupboard and bedsheets among others.

Filled with happiness, Mukarubega appreciated the donations saying she is living a transformed life and can now be self-reliant.

The director of I&M Bank, Robin Bairstow said that the act of supporting the widow is part of joining Rwandans during the commemoration of relatives killed during the 1994 genocide against Tutsi .He promised to extend support to more vulnerable survivors.
To date, I&M Bank has identified 25 former employees killed during the 1994 genocide perpetrated against Tutsi.
