{The Rwanda National Police calls on Members of Rwanda Youth Volunteers in Community Policing (RYVCP) in Huye District for their contribution in crime prevention and urged them to enhance their outreach to ensure they stamp out crimes in their community.}
The call was made by the District Police Commander (DPC), Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Francis Muheto during a meeting with members of RYVCP in Huye held on February 5.
SSP Muheto urged them to be more vigilant so as to achieve their ultimate goal of having a crime-free Rwanda.
“You can only achieve your goal of ensuring public safety through community policing; you have to always remind the public that ensuring security begins with an individual,” said SSP Muheto.
He picked out drug abuse as one of the key areas that need urgent attention from youth volunteers saying that the knowledge they have about effects of drug abuse should be disseminated to a wider community to ensure public safety.
SSP Muheto urged them to rally for more cooperation with security agencies in sharing timely information that would assist in crime prevention, detection and arrest of criminals.
“Rwanda National Police is committed to facilitating you with all possible means and cooperating with you to ensure that we collectively keep our country safer,” he said.
According to the Huye district coordinator, Dieudonné Kayitakirwa, “stamping out crimes requires vigilance and we cannot achieve that when we deal with effects of crimes, instead we should dwell more on preventive measures.”
Kayitakirwa reminded his colleagues about their mandate and urged them to always consult the authorities whenever they face any challenge.
He thanked the police for continuously equipping them with knowledge of how best they can execute their responsibilities.
Rwanda National Police continuously reaches out to the youth and has trained members of the RYVCP on crime prevention.
The organization that is made up of 1,000 members countrywide, support communities by carrying out crime prevention awareness programmes in schools and communities against drug abuse, corruption ‘ gender and domestic violence, among others.
Community-oriented policing is a strategy adopted by RNP that focuses on building ties and working closely with members of the communities to overcome crime in their localities.
