Students have been called upon to be vigilant against “evil-minded people” that would try to seduce them with material things as means to lure them into human trafficking.
While addressing about 450 students under Imbuto Foundation programme attending workshop Butare secondary schools in Huye District, recently, the District Police Commander, Supt. Jean Marie Vianney Karegyeya, noted that the young people are students in particular are the majority targeted, which requires them to have vast knowledge on the modern-day slavery to be on a preventive side.
Students from different secondary schools across the country have been urged to be vigilant and fight against human trafficking.
The DPC enlightened the students on the dangers associated with human trafficking, tricks traffickers use to lure unsuspecting people and how to overcome or to prevent such acts from happening.
“Human traffickers try to play around your desires or hobbies and will attempt to make things or promises like education or highly paying jobs abroad, seem real. The evil behind that is your suffering, torture, forced labour and sexual exploitation for a penny or nothing,” Supt. Karegyeya told the students.
“Fighting human trafficking is a collective responsibility by passing over the message to others and double-checking, verifying and talking to parents, teachers, friends and government institutions on people that come to you with offers; don’t fall prey by going by the conditional terms in most cases by those that come to you with such offers,” he added.
The DPC further urged them to be police ambassadors and always share with the police information on people involved in other crimes like drug trafficking and abuse, gender based violence and child abuse.
