{The District Police Commander of Huye, Chief Supt. Francis Muheto has told over 800 students of Kabutare Technical Secondary School (TSS) to be wary of people who may promise them scholarships or good jobs abroad noting that such people may be human traffickers.}
CSP Muheto made the call during a meeting with the students held at the school on March 22, which was part of the Rwanda National Police’s ongoing countrywide anti-crime awareness campaign.
He urged the students to take a stand against human trafficking saying that the vice can manifest in different forms depending on the tricks the traffickers apply.
The end result, he said, the victim end up being exploited and subjected to varied forms of abuse.
“Human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery where people are trafficked and sold for different forms of exploitation which could either be forced labour or sexual exploitation,” he told the students.
“Traffickers use violence, threats, blackmail, false promises, deception, and manipulation to trap vulnerable individuals for several ugly kinds of exploitation,” he added.
He urged them to spread the awareness in their peers and communities to prevent the likely act of trafficking in human beings.
He further appealed to them to always inform police or local leaders of any suspicious person that tries to seduce them with such empty promises.
Girls, he observed, are the most targeted although boys have in some cases also fallen victims.
CSP Muheto further encouraged students to champion the fight against drug abuse.
Christophe Nkusi, the Director of the vocational school, thanked the police for the message delivered to the students and pledged continues partnership in sensitizing the youth against human trafficking and drug abuse, among others.
Meanwhile, the students, at the end of the meeting, formed an anti-crime club and vowed to use it as a forum to discuss issues through which they can contribute to crime prevention.
