Huye: Drivers, motorcyclists reminded to observe traffic rules

{Drivers and motorcycle taxi operators in Huye District have been reminded to use the road lawfully respecting road safety signs as a means to prevent accidents that arise from bad road usage.}

The message was delivered by the district mayor, Eugene Kayiranga Muzuka during a meeting with about 600 motorcyclists and drivers operating in the district, held on January 13.

It was also attended by the District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Francis Muheto and local leaders.

Mayor Kayiranga reminded them that their profession has guidelines and standards, which they should always follow.

He reminded them that as the African football championship (CHAN) starts in Kigali, Huye and Rubavu, drivers are expected to drive carefully at all times, whether transporting football fanatics or other people, they should limit their speed and avoid over taking in sharp corners and other dangerous spots.

CSP Muheto echoed the same message urging them to always park at designated points adding that there are some drivers and motorcyclists who cause commotion parking even in hot spots, which can result into accidents.

He also warned them against tendencies of signaling each other whenever they notice a traffic officer along the highway, which he said is a bad behavior that promotes bad road usage and can contribute to accidents, especially when they are over speeding.

“You shouldn’t operate under watch… it should be an obligation for each one of you to driver carefully minding about your life and that of passengers you are transporting,” CSP Muheto said.

He urged them to always move with their driving documents and produce them every time there are required.

He further appealed to them to be agents of community policing and report any suspicious passengers or those who attempt to use their transport means to traffic or smuggle illegal and illicit goods like cannabis.
