Huye blackout: Engineer in charge arrested

The incident of power blackout for 12 minutes at Huye stadium during the ongoing CHAN tournament when Cameroun was playing with Ethiopia yesterday, has triggered the arrest of one of the staff from the Ministry of Sports and Culture (MINISPOC).

Eng. Sebadari Aimable, the officer in charge off electricity in MINISPOC who was at Huye stadium during the match is being questioned about the blackout.

Police has acted with emergency to investigate the matter and to prevent insecurity that may arise in the future as the stadium accommodates about 10,000 fans.

Talking to IGIHE, ACP Twahirwa Celestin said that all people that were entrusted with the responsibility of stadium maintenance have been questioned and said one of them, Sebadari, is suspected to have failed to articulately accomplish his duty.

He said it is a serious offense to disconnect power during night and in a place with big crowds of soccer fans as this puts their safety in jeopardy.

Rurangayire Guy, a MINISPOC employee in charge of supervising Huye stadium, described the incident as general failure.

He said that he immediately investigated what happened. He however denied to comment on information doing rounds that the generator run out of fuel.

Some witnesses have said they saw RDF trucks helping to bring fuel when the incident occurred. The power blackout occurred during the 36th minute of the match and reconnected in 12 minutes.
