Hunger hits Gihembe refugee camp

Refugees in Gihembe refugee camp, Gicumbi district, Northern Province face hunger as some of have not got subsistence cash to buy foods and others items.

The refugees attribute the hunger to new system of aiding them where they receive money instead of food rations.

Recently, 50 refugees went to Gicumbi district offices to establish why they hadn’t gotten monthly support.

They have expressed worries over lack of anyone advocating for their survival.
Normally, every refugee in the camp is supposed to get Rwf 6300 monthly. The camp accommodates Congolese refugees who arrived in Rwanda in 1977 and were firstly camped in Mudende camp before getting relocated to Gihembe refugee camp.
