{Laurent Nkongoli, the head of Human Rights Commission in Rwanda has criticized the recent publication of Human Rights Watch (HRW) report on the performance of human rights in Rwanda.}
The report released recently from a survey conducted in 90 countries, indicates that freedom of expression and political movements are threatened in Rwanda.
He criticized the report saying it is biased and should be ignored.
“Human Rights Watch is biased. It concentrates on what it calls wrong things and goes away from giving explanations to good deeds. Indeed they immediately publish findings without consulting concerned stakeholders,” he said in an exclusive interview with IGIHE.
The report released by HRW indicates that FPR political party dominates in parliament. Nkongoli said that around the World, a political party in power holds more seats in the parliament.
He decried the report’s findings where HRW indicated that political parties in Rwanda have no freedom yet facts on the ground show that they operate freely.
Nkongoli says that freedom of expression exists as long as someone does not break the law or infringe on other people’s rights.
The report also hints on the closure of BBC Kinyarwanda and Kirundi versions in Rwanda which it says has denied Rwandans access to unbiased information. Nkongoli however says Human Rights Watch has no proof that Rwandans lost access to balanced news.
On the other hand, the report commends Rwanda for having ratified international agreements on fighting against torture as well as implementing new rules and reformed activities and responsibilities of Gikondo Rehabilitation Center.
