The governor of Southern Province, Munyantwari Alphonse has advised village leaders to work together with village administration to facilitate service delivery.
He said this while responding to talks about complaints raised by village leaders who ask compensation claiming to have worked for extra hours.
In a talk show aired at RBA, Munyantwari said that there would be less workload if local leaders collaborated well with Community Health Workers, Community Mediators and Intore (secondary school leaving students trained in National Itorero).
“Village leaders request for a higher remuneration because they seem to work alone for many hours. However, villages have volunteers that they should work with,” he said.
Munyantwari said that those who will be elected in upcoming local leaders’ elections will be trained on effective way of getting their tasks accomplished.
“The village administrative committee members are volunteers. It is not a paid job. The only thing that can be addressed is to remove the way of working for many hours as paid workers. However, tasks would be lessened if they shared responsibilities,” he noted.
He said that the government has committed to supporting village leaders by paying for their medical insurance and in addition to communication facilities.
