The government of Rwanda says it has embarked on addressing droughts affecting some regions of the country resulting into crop failure and famine.
In 2015, the droughts persisted in some districts of Eastern Province including Nyagatare, Kayonza and Rwamagana which forced farmers to cultivate in irregular times which affected crop performance.
Drought has also been experienced in Southern Province in Nyanza, Ruhango and Kamonyi districts where the harvest of cassava has been affected by drought related diseases.
In a twitter discussion, the Prime Minister, Anastase Murekezi held with various Rwandans who asked him about current measures to address drought-related challenges resulting in many households getting affected by hunger, he said that the matter is being followed up to support households that have been affected by drought.
“A program of helping drought-affected regions has started,” he said.
In September last year, it was announced that some countries from Africa will be affected by El Nino, that climate change would cause droughts and floods in some regions. Some charitable organizations have said that the year 2016 will be marked by food shortage especially in African countries.
