Rubavu District to Give Genocide Victims Descent Burrial

{{In line with the 20th commemoration of the Genocide against ethnic Tutsi, Victims of the genocide in Rubavu district (former Gisenyi prefecture) are being accorded a descent burial in a way to truly honour and remember them.}}

The 1994 genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda claimed over a million lives in just a hundred days leaving the whole country and hearts of many destroyed.

Mbarushimana Nelson an official from Rubavu district said most genocide victims in former Gisenyi Prefecture were dumped in ditches popularly known as Komini Rouge.

However, there are arrangements to retrieve the bodies and burry them decently with honour and dignity.

Mbarushimana noted that the operation to retrieve bodies of victims from ditches started on May 17 and will be processed in preparation for descent burial in June. Relatives of victims are urged to take part in this process.

A genocide Memorial site is under construction but is expected to be completed by June. Construction has so far consumed Frw 52Million but an extra Frw120Million is required to complete construction.
