Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) in Gisagara District have been urged to be more vibrant in crime prevention by initiating stronger measures against crime and lawlessness in their neighborhoods.
The call was made by the District Community Liaison Officer, Inspector of Police (IP) Marie Chantal Uwambaye on February 17 during a meeting that brought together 50 members of CPCs from Kibirizi sector of Gisagara District.
IP Uwambaye pointed out that CPCs have been influential in promoting law and order in communities by sensitizing their neighborhoods about the need to fight crime – and urged them to be more vibrant in executing their responsibilities.
She reminded them that they should maintain a close link with the public and help in solving or report disputes before they escalate into conflict or domestic violence.
“You are required to ensure that safety of your residents is sustained and assured at all times. Whenever people face disputes of any kind, always be available to assists them and also report to Police as soon as possible so that intervention measure can be availed before any harm results,” she said.
She urged them to devise initiatives to overcome lawbreakers including drug dealers, human traffickers among others; saying that “by focusing more on security issues and overcoming earlier, you will reassure the people that your work is very important in fostering the safety of their lives and property…Work with zeal and patriotism in ensuring public safety.”
IP Uwambaye told members of CPCs to maintain a respectable stature in society so that people can trust them.
“Do not collaborate with criminals but instead, always collaborate with Police local leaders to ensure that all those who want to destabilize the safety of others can be brought to books,” she said.
One of the CPCs members, Daniel Nyatera commended Police for always being available to the public, and pledged to be more vibrant in crime prevention with utmost discipline in a bid to foster public safety.
“Respecting the rule of law is important and every peace-loving citizen should ensure that stability and safety are maintained. As a CPC in Kibirizi sector, we will endeavor to work more closely with the public to solve pertinent challenges and to provide information on any suspected criminals,” he promised.
