Gisagara: Commercial motorcyclists up against crimes

{About sixty commercial motorcyclists operating in Gikonko, Musha, and Mamba sectors of Gisagara district have pledged to partner with Rwanda National Police (RNP) and other security institutions in championing the fight against crimes in their areas.}

This was during a meeting held on February 29, convened by the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP) Marie Chantal Uwambaye.

Jean de Dieu Sindayigaya, one of the motorcyclists, said; “Security and safety is the reason we are able to operate our business smoothly, and we have to lead the front in preserving it.”

“All the time I come across someone violating the law I will not hesitate to inform the police … this is the commitment that we have all made, we have to champion this fight against crimes in our areas,” said Sindayigaya

Another commercial motorcyclist, Elias Bizimana urged his colleagues to always be on the lookout for anyone who may be dealing in drugs saying that most drug traffickers use commercial motorcycles to traffic drugs from one place to another.

“We shouldn’t be consumed by our need for money and forget that we have a responsibility to keep our societies safe,” Bizimana said.

IP Uwambaye commended the existing partnership saying that, “The relations between the Police and commercial motorcycles are very good but we need to maintain it and even take it to another level by jointly preventing crimes in our communities.”

She added that domestic and gender based violence are among other crimes that requires immediate response.

“Crimes like drug abuse and domestic or gender based violence should be completely stamped out of our communities – we can achieve this faster if we collaborated and share information in the quickest time possible to ensure offenders are brought to justice.”

She urged motorcyclists to also abide by traffic rules and regulations as means of avoiding road accidents.
