Police in Gicumbi District has intercepted a Toyota Land Cruiser plate number RAA 880Y, which was allegedly trafficking 400 liters of crude gin, Kanyanga and 41 cartons of chief waragi – both banned brands of gin in Rwanda.
According to the Northern region Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, Police received information from residents about a vehicle that was headed to Kigali, loaded with the banned gin.
“At about 10:30pm on April 4, police officers put a snap check in Rukomo along Gatuna-Kigali highway but on noting the roadblock in a distance, the driver, who was with another person in the car, parked on the roadside and both ran away,” IP Gasasira.
“We have impounded the vehicle and we identified all those connected to this criminal business, it’s a matter of time before they are allocated and arrested. We believe the same channel through which this and other unlawful activities are brought to our knowledge will continue to be a successful network against against crimes,” he added.
He thanked those who provided the police with the information and appealed to all Rwandans to be key figures in identifying and reporting crimes.
“Fighting drug abuse remains among the priorities of Rwanda National Police owing to the fact that it is the root cause of other crimes. We believed increased community operation, police operations, the activeness of community policing committees, youth volunteers in community policing, local night patrol and exchange of information in time between police and all these partners will be significant in crime prevention,” he noted.
