Police in Gicumbi District, on December 19, impounded a car carrying 65 boxes of chief waragi, an illicit gin banned in Rwanda.
The District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Dan Ndayambaje, said that the Toyota Carina registration number UAS 445D was intercepted in Kaniga Sector and impounded to Gicumbi police station.
Chief Supt. Ndayambaje said that the successful operation followed information provided by the resident.
“We acted on information received at about midnight, from a resident that there was a vehicle loaded with illicit gin, which headed to Kigali, and a snap-check was immediately mounted in Kiniga where it was intercepted, although the people on board managed to escape after they parked and abandoned the car in a distance after noticing a roadblock,” he said.
Meanwhile, police in Nyamasheke District, seized about 400 litres of illicit brew in Cyato Sector.
Three people were also in connection with the act.
