Gicumbi armed robbery new face, traders made to ‘pay taxes’ in bushes

Gicumbi residents are worried over increased cases of theft by people armed with machetes and swords, calling on the concerned parties to work towards eliminating the vise.

The robbers, said to be young men, kidnap residents and take them to a location known as Gatete in Kaniga sector, robbing them clean of whatever they would have been found with.

Gatete is a stretch in Mulindi locality of Byumba, where thieves waylay traders taking produce and merchandise to markets, coercing them to ‘pay taxes’ or else rob them of all the goods.

One of residents who talked to TV1 said that these bandits recently robbed his merchandise worth Rwf 500,000.

“They stopped me along the way and stole my merchandise worth Rwf 500,000, part which was from a loan I got from a bank,” he said.

The acting executive secretary of Kaniga sector, Bangirana Jean Marie Vianney said that the matter of thievery is being addressed.

“We have taken measures. Citizens and security personnel collaborate in patrols,” he said.

Residents, however, have requested investigations into the matter of people asking taxes along the highway since they even issue receipts to people they cheat in ‘collecting taxes.’
