Genocide widows to receive extra support during Avega Week

Widows left after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, under their umbrella organization, AVEGA, will receive special support during the upcoming Avega Week where AVEGA-AGAHOZO will concentrate on reconstruction of genocide widows’ houses .

The upcoming Avega Week that will last from 5th to 12th December 2015 is part of activities to mark 20 years since AVEGA-AGAHOZO was established.

Rehabilitating houses of widows, building kitchens, backyards, fencing, clearing roads, weeding gardens of elderly women will be among highlight activities during the Avega Week.

Valerie Mukabayire, the President of AVEGA-AGAHOZO has said the upcoming week is organized under the theme “Susuruka mubyeyi” (feel delighted parent) as an effort of renewing, reenergizing widows hope and celebrating the association achievements n the past 20 years.

“In collaboration with Rwandan community; we will concentrate on activities boosting genocide widows’ welfare,” she said, adding that the program aims at consolidating the achievements including health care and strengthening resilience.

The organization has been facing challenges of disrepair of widows’ houses, trauma and very old widows in need of special assistance.

AVEGA-AGAHOZO was launched on 15th May ,1995 by 50 genocide widows .
