
Alex Rutindura 26 (above) was last night attacked and severely injured by six unknown people who used machettes. The incident happened October 1, at chez lando, Remera at about 9 PM.
How it Started
Rutindura had returned from Gitarama district where he had been working as a manson. He arrived at Nyabugogo bus terminal, he boaded a motor-taxi that was to take him to Kanombe a city suburb.
After reaching chezlando, the motortaxi driver stopped and made a phone call to unknown people. After a few minutes six unidentified men arrived at the scene armed with machettes and metal bars and attacked.
Rutindura who is trained in karatee tried to defend himself but he was severely injured before he fled the scene.
He walked upto Kanombe but sought help along the way but he wasn’t helped at all. He arrived at Kanombe at midnight.
IGIHE managed to linkup with Rutindura at Kacyiru Police hospital. He said, he doesn’t know the people who attakced him and doesn’t know the motorcycle driver.
Rutindura says this is the third time he has been attacked in the manner by unknown people leaving him severely injured.
Two years ago, Rutindura had visited his grandmother in Butare, Matyazo village.
He was on a bicycle when he was stopped by two unknown people. He was attacked in the process and they broke his arm. He managed to escape after fighting them off.
Last year, he was returning from work at Akagera Motors just outside the gate he was attacked by unknown people but rescued by a friend.
Rutindura is a survivor of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
He is currently battling a court case involving demand for right to assume custody for his parents property including land, houses and cattle.
The Commission for the fight against Genocide CNLG has been following up his case.
Yolande Mukagasana an Advisor at CNLG told IGIHE that the commission is aware of Rutinduras case.
However in this court case, someone identified as Gahenda alleged that Rutindura is a Burundian and not a Rwandan and thus has no right to claim for the said property.
“DNA tests have been conducted to assertain Rutindura’s heritage. We are waiting for the results,”said Mukagasana adding that , “I cant elaborate more about the details.lets wait for the DNA results.”
