{The Commissioner General of Prisons in Rwanda has denied information which says that there is a prisoner who was beaten to death in the Mpanga Prison. Gen. Paul Rwarakabaije was responding to allegations that have been spread by members of PS Imberakuri of Ntaganda, who is also detained in Mpanga Prison.}
Gen. Rwarakabije did not say that the prisoner “was not dead”, However he rejects falsified information which shows that the prisoner was deliberately beaten to death by his doctor.
The information which was spreading Sunday, January 26, 2014 reported that Mr. Alexis Nshimiyimana, from Ngoma in the Eastern Province died on 01.25.2014 after being beaten by his doctor.
In a press statement that was released by PS Imberakuri of Ntaganda and signed by Alexis Bakunzibake stated that “it all began on 24 January, 2014 when one of the prisoners escaped. After the escape, the prison guards severely had beaten fellow prisoners accusing them of facilitating escape. Two of them, Mr. Boniface Karinigabo and Mr. Jean Claude Sinaribaraga are in a very critical condition.” Read the part of the statement adding that this was a result of this climate of tension that Alexis Nshimiyimana was beaten to death by his doctor.
Gen. Rwarakabije Paul said “The said deceased detainee was previously sick. It’s true he didn’t get the necessary care as a patient who was in need, but he had not been beaten as it was reported and we are also doing investigation to find out why the deceased was not given due medical attention”
Meanwhile, the Head of Mpanga Prison confirmed to IGIHE journalist who was investigating the matter that Alexis’s death was caused by cancer.

On the other side Ntaganda, the Founder of PS Imberakuri, is accused to be behind the strike that was organized in Mpanga prison where he mobilized other prisoners to go on strike as a way to protest against the death of their fellow whom he said was killed by the Prison Authority.
