Gen.Nyamvumba Replaced by Tanzanian at UNAMID

{{A Tanzanian General has been appointed as the new Force Commander of the UN/AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), a UN statement said on Wednesday.}}

Lt.-Gen. Paul Ignace Mella who has been serving as Chief of Defence Intelligence Organization in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, replaces Lt.-Gen. Patrick Nyamvumba of Rwanda after successfully completing his UNAMID assignment on March 31.

According to the statement, “The UN Secretary-General would like to take this opportunity to express his deep appreciation to Lieutenant-General Nyamvumba for his dedication and invaluable service during his tenure in UNAMID”.

Lt-Gen Mella has also held a number of important operational, command and staff positions, including as Director of Foreign Intelligence in the Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Forces, Commanding Officer of an Infantry Battalion in the UN Mission in Liberia, and Defence Adviser at the Tanzania High Commission in Uganda.

UNAMID, which is the largest peacekeeping mission in the world, was established in July 2007, with civilian protection in Darfur region as its core mandate.

It is also tasked with contributing to security for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and verifying implementation of agreements and assisting with an inclusive political process, among other responsibilities.
