According to Muhire Paul, Custom Office Manager at Gatuna Border, the number of taxpayers has increased from 1000 to 3500 per week.
The border operates 24hours handling about 200 trucks and 40 small cars that cross the Border to Rwanda.
Butera said most of trucks crossing Gatuna are from regional countries.
He added that about 75,000 travelers cross the border monthly.
The number of travelers has also increased following an EAC decision to issue a 6-months free visa that allows citizens to travel and stay in a regional country within a period of six month or less.
Travellers through the border noted that a single currency would solve the existing challenges of exchanging money at the border.
EAC officials said they are optimistic that the monetary Union will soon be implemented in line with the common market protocol.
According to Shem B. a Ugandan Minister for EAC Affairs said with the implementation of monetary Union, there is a view of having common currency “So that we can no longer have problems of money exchange.”
