{Gatsibo district officials have confirmed that during assessments carried out recently, it was established that five Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operating in the district are serving no purpose in addressing the district challenges and therefore plan to orient them into implementing activities that are in line with supporting district development aspirations or face closure. }
During the recent retreat that brought together local leaders of Gatsibo district and various partners, the mayor, Gasana Richard, told IGIHE that some NGOs do no serve interests of citizens and “have useless projects. The district is to embark defining guidelines for these organizations and be banned in case they do not comply.”
Rugamba Egide , the Director General / Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Department, MINALOC, said that any partners committing to support community development are required to respect guidelines, an evaluation of the organization’s structure and activities conducted as well as identifying the source of fund to establish whether it is not working for external parties.
“After realizing the performance of partners, let’s set guidelines for what they must do to support the district’s development and assess the implementation of activities,” he advised. More than 1000 NGOs operate in Rwanda.
