Gatsibo Farmers Fined frw30,000 for Mixed Cropping

Gatsibo district authorities have warned local leaders in the district against illegally demanding fines from residents.

The decision followed recent claims that local authorities were demanding citizens to pay fines due to the fact that they have mixed crops in their small parcels while others were said to consolidate their lands and cultivating one selected crop in the area.

As a way of improving agricultural production, Rwanda has decided to implement land consolidation policy where citizens are asked to cultivate crops which are friendly with the soil quality of the targeted area.

Some citizens complained about unfairness of the move.

A resident in Murambi sector on condition of anonymity told IGIHE that “if you are caught in the act of mixed cropping, Agronomists in the area fine you Frw30,000 and don’t provide receipts justifying the payment.”

However, the District Mayor Ruboneza ambroise said that the act of fining citizens is considered as robbery.

He said the problem will be resolved as soon as possible.
