{Commercial motorcyclists operating in Gatsibo district have pledged to partner Rwanda National Police and other security institutions in the fight against crimes.}
The commitment was made during a meeting held on February 16 and brought together 67 commercial motorcyclists operating in Kabarore Sector of Gatsibo District. The meeting aimed at sensitizing motorists to strengthen cooperation with the police in line with crime prevention.
Motorist also seized the opportunity to establish an anti-crime club and the subsequently elected its coordinator Charles Musonera.
In his address to the motorists, the District Community Liaison Officer (DCLO) Inspector of Police (IP) Rogers Rwakayiru, commended the existing partnership but encouraged them to uplift it so as to ensure crimes are efficiently and effectively dealt with in the district.
“Cooperation of Police with public has continued to register significant achievements as far as peace and security are concerned, you are therefore always required to partner security organs through Community Policing approach in order to further make our communities free from crime,” said IP Rwakayiro.
Rwakayiro also urged them to take precaution against malaria by using treated mosquito nets and ensure the clear out bushes around their neighbourhoods.
One of the motorcyclists, Alphonse Bagabo, thanked Police for reaching out to them saying that, “From this meeting I now understand better the importance of partnership between us and the Police. We as commercial motorcyclists have to play a primary role in crime prevention but we can only achieve that through partnership with all security agencies.”
The coordinator of the newly formed anti-crime club, Musonera said the club offers a forum for information sharing and also served as a platform to mobilise youth to partake into crime prevention initiatives.
The sensitised motorists operate under Cooperative de Taxi Motos de cyangarama (COTAMOCYA).
The head of the cooperative, Ahmed Ntagara, emphasized the importance of the meeting, saying that motorists make contacts with lots of people during their daily business and hence get access to a lot of information.
“Most criminals especially drug traffickers use motorcycles to transport illicit commodities including narcotic drugs. You need to be more vigilant of such people and quickly tip Police in case you suspect some of them to ensure they are arrested,” said Ntagara.
