Gasabo: Youth sensitized on human trafficking

{Youth in Gasabo District have been asked to remain alert and guard against all forms of criminality including crimes targeted at them especially human trafficking and drug abuse.}

The advice was given recently to over 60 youth in Kagugu sector during a community outreach exercise conducted by the Rwanda National Police

The youth through their association ‘World Mission’ were also urged to constantly remain aware of unscrupulous individuals who would target and lure them into unlawful activities such as drug trade and consumption

Gasabo District Community Liaison officer (DCLO), Inspector of Police (IP) Théogene Rugema Mugabo said that drug and human traffickers are always targeting the youth.

“Police records show that about 80 percent of victims of human and drug trafficking are susceptible young people, majority women,“ he said

He said victims are lured into believing that a better life will be found elsewhere but end up using them for hard labour, prostitution or even removal of body organ.

“In case someone goes missing, always be quick to inform the police to facilitate police investigations which can establish if they have been trafficked or in danger.”

“Don’t disregard anything suspicious; inform us and we will establish the truth,” he said urging them to also report people who approach them promising to take them abroad.
