Police in Gasabo District is holding a man for allegedly stealing money and other items from a German national.
Omar Manzi was arrested on August 22 in Kimihirura Sector in Gasabo where he allegedly stole the money from the victim amounting to Rwf150000 and other electronic banking tools and documents.
Police spokesperson for the Central region, Supt. Modeste Mbabazi said that after the victim reported the theft, officers were quick to respond, located the suspect and apprehended him.
“All the stolen money and other banking tools that include a Visa card, were recovered from the suspect and returned to the rightful owner,” said Supt. Mbabazi said.
“At the time of his arrest, the suspect first denied being behind the theft, but after officers searched him, they found the Visa card and the money on him hidden in the shoes.”
The victim thanked Rwanda National Police for the quick response and recovering his belongings.
He called upon the public to always be quick to report in case they lose their belongings, to ease fast response and timely recovery of the stolen items.
He further reminded individuals involved in such theft and other criminal and illegal activities to try something else which is legal, for survival noting that their such wrongful acts won’t last for so long.
“Anything stolen, however small it is, is a crime because it has its owner and it also mean something to them. A crime is a crime and you will face the law as it stipulates.”
Theft is punishable with a sentence of between six months and two years and a fine of between two and five times the value of the stolen items, or one of these penalties.
