High fruits prices have been caused by a ban on fruits exports by Burundi government recently.
Sources from Burundi business community say that Rwanda’s southern neighbor decision to ban fruit exports to Rwanda is meant to satisfy the fruit market in their country.
Several Mangoes, Oranges and tangerines in Rwanda are mostly imported from neighboring Burundi.
Fruits traders in Kigali say that they have endured several months of fruits scarcity prompting them to hike prices per kilo of fruits including; mangoes and Tangerines.
Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania are major sources of fruits sold on the Rwandan market. However, traders say this season they are expecting fruits from Burundi but are not readily available.
A kilogram of tangerine fruits costs Frw600 on the current market price. During high supply, a Kilogram costs Frw250.
Mangoes are being sold at Frw1000/Kg from Frw800/Kg.
