The Rafale jet hit the depot and completely destroyed it, according to a statement released by the Elysée presidential palace just hours after the strike.

“Other operations will follow in the coming days,” the statement said.

The announcement came a day after President François Hollande told the French press the country would conduct an air assault campaign on the Islamic militants, in support of Iraqi troops and at the request of leaders in Baghdad.

Hollande said on Thursday France’s military involvement in an international campaign against the Islamic State (IS) group would be limited to air strikes in Iraq and not include ground troops.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls would soon give France’s parliament more information about the military strategy in Iraq, the Elysée statement added.

France’s announcement came a few hours after Washington said that US warplanes had struck an IS training camp in Iraq in its first bombing not directly supporting Iraqi or Kurdish forces battling the jihadists.
