{Rwanda National Police on Saturday arrested four people in Nyagatare and Kamonyi districts in connection with dealing in illicit brew. In a collaborated crackdown, Police seized 46 liters of crude gin, commonly known as Kanyanga, four cartons of banned chief waragi and 620 liters of substance used in brewing crude gin}
In an operation that took place in Kazaza cell, Rwempasha sector of Nyagatare district, Police arrested Theogene Habishuti and Jean Bosco Habineza who were in possession of 40 liters of Kanyanga and four cartons of chief waragi. The two are currently held at Nyagatare police station.
On the same day, Police jointly with DASSO and residents of Bibungo cell, Nyamiyaga sector of Kamonyi District, in a crackdown that saw Laurent Ntagengwa arrested with six liters of Kanyanga and 300 liters on ‘melase’ a substance used in brewing crude gin, while Consolée Mukandoli a 48-year old woman was found in possession of 320 liters of ‘melase’. The two are detained at Mugina police post as investigations proceed.
Constant operations and sensitizations have been conducted by RNP and its partners in crime prevention to end the consumption and trafficking of illicit substances.
Southern Province Police spokesperson, CSP Hubert Gashagaza encouraged members of the public to refrain from use of illicit substances saying that, besides being crimes, abuse of drugs, narcotics and illicit brew have effects to the consumers and the their communities.
“Major crimes like sexual harassment, rape and defilement are usually associated with consumption of these substances. They also have a financial effect to families of those dealing in them,” Gashagaza said.
He farther cautioned youth saying that illicit substances usually lead them to immorality behaviors that could have health effects to their lives.
