CEPGL Foreign Ministers Meet to Revive Bloc

{{Foreign Affairs ministers from member countries of (Communauté Économique des Pays des Grand Lacs) CEPGL met in Bujumbura, Burundi where they agreed to revive activities of the bloc. }}

Rwanda was represented by Louise Mushikiwabo–the minister of Foreign Affairs. This was the 23rd meeting of CEPGL foreign Affairs ministers since establishement of the bloc.

During their meeting, the officials agreed that member states should pay their arrears owed to the CEPGL organization to ensure its operations resume unhindered.

The meeting also reviewed the role of CEPGL secretariat and approved its budget.

Officials also approved the energy projects Ruzizi 3 and Ruzizi 4 and to revive a CEPGL regional research center IRAZ.

They also provided for the forthcoming heads of state meeting that is scheduled to take place in DRC capital Kinshasa.

Herman Tuyaga the CEPGL permanent secretary told Media that Bloc held such a meeting two years ago- he added that decisions adopted in the CEPGL meeting are significantly useful to member states.

The ministers found that CEPGL provisions on peace and security were lacking and required to be reviewed to align them with the prevailing and gravity of peace and security situation in the Eastern DRC.

However, the new peace and security plan will require deliberation by Defense ministers from member states before its approved and adopted.
