Football veterans awaited in Kigali

The development has been confirmed by the International Federation of Football Veterans which revealed that the legends expected participate in the Veteran Clubs World Championship (VCWC 2024) will arrive in Rwanda in October this year. The tournament is due in Rwanda for the first time in May 2024.

The ‘Legends in Rwanda’ tour seeks to promote the 2024 Veteran Clubs World Championship to attract global participation, mobilize the Rwandan and African to be part of the event, promote Visit Rwanda campaign and recruit business, institutional, operational and media partners as well.

Gatete Jimmy, Khalifou Fidila (former captain of Senegal national football team), Patrick Mboma, Roger Milla and Anthony Baffoe are among other legends who will participate in promotional tour scheduled between 12th and 14th October 2022.

Speaking to the media on Thursday 25th August 2022, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Didier Shema Maboko revealed that selecting Rwanda as the host of the tournament is of great significance.

“First if all, it reflects Rwanda’s international credibility. Secondly, it helps us to promote our country’s visibility through Visit Rwanda campaign. The event will also serve as a platform for discussions on development in a broader perspective,” he said.

Fred Siewe, the President of the International Federation of Football Veterans has said that hosting the event in Rwanda is a great success.

“The dreams are coming true. We selected Rwanda because it is a beautiful country with guaranteed security and warm hospitality. In fact, it is the right place to host the tournament,” he affirmed.

The tournament will bring together 150 football veterans from 40 countries (eight teams) facing off in 20 games.

The tournament which seeks to share the passion of the game will coincide with forums aimed at contributing to sustainable development.

These include peace, education, technology, investment and tourism forums.

Jimmy Gatete is among legends awaited in Kigali.
Roger Milla is also among football legends awaited in Kigali.
Patrick Mboma will also participate in the tournament.

A minute of silence was observed to commemorate Rwandan singer Yvan Buravan who recently succumbed to pancreatic cancer.
