Focus on crime prevention, CPCs told

Members of Community Policing Committees (CPCs) from Ngoma, Nyabihu, Huye and Kicukiro districts have been urged to be more vibrant in crime prevention by working closely with the people to jointly detect and share information with police on anything that can lead to insecurity.

The call was made during their separate meetings with police held on May 12.

In Ngoma, the District Police Commander, Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) Javier Mutaganda reminded over 480 members of CPCs that they are influential in promoting law and order in communities by sensitizing their neighborhoods about the need to fight crime.

He urged them to be more vibrant in executing their responsibilities.

“You cannot work in isolation and expect remarkable results, and that’s why as police, we work with everyone but also count on you to work with the people to feel that gap where police can’t be at all times,” SSP Mutaganda said.

He noted issues like domestic conflicts, which are still common in Ngoma, can be detected and prevented from being violent, if they face their task with passion and commitment.

He highlighted fighting use and sale of narcotic drugs, human trafficking and gender based violence as other high impact crimes that should be emphasized during their community awareness.

Elsewhere, similar messages were also echoed in Nyabihu, Huye and Kicukiro where the CPCs were equally reminded to double their efforts tighten night patrols – Irondo – and make Neighbourhood Watch an effective crime prevention and detection tool.

Theophile Bizimana one of the CPC members commended RNP for imparting more skills to CPCs to enable them carry out their activities more efficiently.

“Police has enabled us to work efficiently in sustaining the peace in our community. We should work together and avoid indulging in activities like drunkenness which affect our output,” Bizimana said.

There are over 150, 000 members of CPCs across the country.

The community policing initiatives have been praised for playing a significant role to support the Rwanda National Police operations in ensuring safety and security of the country.

The strategy involves the public in solving localized problems and to make specific improvements that enhance the overall quality of life in the communities.

It, therefore, gives authority to the community to feel reassured and to have a sense of belonging and responsibility in identify, reporting, fighting and preventing crimes
