Five Drug Dealers Arrested

{{Police has arrested five suspects in different parts of the country for selling and consuming illicit brew and narcotics.}}

The suspects are identified as Jean Damascene Havugimana, Grace Mukanyandwi, Germaine Uwera, Tuyishime and Jeanette Uwimana.

Mukanyandwi and Uwera were arrested in Nyabugogo Cell, Kigali sector in Nyarugenge District after being found in possession with 257 pellets and 250 grams of cannabis.

They are currently held at Mageragere Police Station.

A cordon and search held in Bwiza cell, Shyogwe Sector in Muhanga District also recovered 7 litres of illicit brew known as kanyanga belonging to Jeanette Uwimana who is currently being held at Nyamabuye Police Station

Havugimana and Tuyishime were found with 27 pellets of cannabis and they are under Police custody at Rushashi Police Station in Gakenke and Buhita Police Post in Burera respectively.

The Central Region Police Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Urbain Mwiseneza, cautioned all those involved in the illegal use and consumption of drugs in a statement, “We will keep pursuing them, give them hard time until they give up or be made to face the rule of the law,”

“I am urging the general public to strengthen the sharing of timely information with security organs and continue reporting all these drug dealers such that our society can be free from drugs which fuel other criminal acts,” he said.

Rwanda National Police is trying hard to locate and cut the supply chain, and it is in this regard that the force urges the community to also own this campaign to eliminate drug related crimes, which are said to be contributors of school drop-outs, domestic violence and theft, thus being a bottleneck to the country’s development.

The suspects will be punished under article 594 of the penal code which states that any person who unlawfully makes, transforms, imports, or sells narcotic drugs within the country, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of three years to five years and a fine of Rwf500, 000 to Rwf5 million.

The law governing narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in Rwanda, in its Article 24, also states that any drink that exceeds forty five percent of alcohol and any other drink which doesn’t have the required quality for consumption shall be considered as narcotic drug.
