Fighting drug trafficking: Two arrested

{Police in Kicukiro and Gakenke districts are holding two people in connection with trafficking and selling narcotic drugs.}

Assinapol Kubwimana, 45, and Faustin Sibomana 60, were arrested separately on July 5 in Kicukiro and Gakenke respectively.

The duo was found either trafficking or selling narcotic drugs including cannabis and banned gin called Chief Waragi and Sky Blue, which are classified as narcotics under article 24 of the law governing narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in Rwanda.

It states that “any drink that exceeds forty five percent of alcohol and any other drink which doesn’t have the required quality for consumption shall be considered as narcotic drug.”

Growing, selling, transformation, transportation, storage and consumption of narcotic drugs are prohibited under article 593 and punishable, under article 594, with a term of imprisonment of three to five years and a fine of up to Rwf5 million.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, Police spokesperson for the City of Kigali said Kubwimana was arrested after residents in Kagasa Cell of Gahanga Sector collaborated with the DASSO personnel and apprehended her before handing her to police.

She was at the time found with quantities of cannabis.

“When there is good partnership between the people, local leaders and security, you expect such results and this should continue to serve as a warning to those still involved in unlawful and criminal activities will be dealt with through such concerted efforts,” said Supt. Hitayezu.
